St. Peter’s Anglican Parish of Glenelg
St. Peter’s Woodlands Grammar School Inc.

Almost as soon as St Peter's Church was built in 1852 parishioners began to discuss the need for a school. The exact date of formalising St Peter's Day School is not known but it was in 1868 that the first head mistress was appointed. The Rector at the time was responsible for the education program, and he attended every morning to lead prayers at assembly.

Just five years after commencement, the school had a growing reputation for the quality of its teaching and school numbers had reached 75. So began a story of continued growth and development that continues to this day.

In 1979 St Peter's Glenelg Anglican Grammar School became an independent incorporated body with its own Council and decision making autonomy. The school kept its links with the Anglican Parish of Glenelg through its new Constitution.

1999 saw the most dramatic period of growth and change in the school's history. In 1998 Woodlands Inc. (previously Woodlands Church of England Girls Grammar School) closed. Woodlands occupied a spacious site on the corner of Pier and Partridge Streets in Glenelg. The opportunity was presented for St Peter’s Glenelg to move on to this location. The St Peter's School site in Waterloo St was sold and later demolished.

The new school, now renamed St Peter's Woodlands Grammar School, opened in February 1999 with 290 students of whom 100 were new. Staff increased by 9 to 26.

The School Today

Today the school is a thriving, vibrant community with over 500 students, Reception to Year 7 and a flourishing Early Learning Centre for children from 18 months of age. There are currently 55 people employed at the school comprising teachers, school assistants, administration and maintenance staff.

The relationship between St Peter’s Woodlands School and the Parish of Glenelg is rather unique. The Rector of the Parish is a member of the School Council and also helps conduct the weekly Friday worship for the school community in St Margaret’s Chapel.

It is a most valuable relationship and works well. The parish clergy feel very much a part of the school community and are certainly seen that way by children, parents and staff alike.
