Read John 14:15-21

“If you love me, keep my commands.  And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—  the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.  Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live.  On that day you will realise that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.”

Today’s reading is about the Holy Spirit as a helper to all of us. There are times when following Jesus feels particularly hard. Jesus promised his friends and followers that God would send the Holy Spirit to be with them. This promise of God’s Spirit is important for us today too. God’s Spirit can encourage us when we are worried, comfort us when we are scared, and help us when we don’t know what to do. Sometimes the Holy Spirit is described as a dove.

Sunday Kids@Home Activity

Today, create a ‘dove prayer’. Draw a big dove outline on a piece of paper and cut it out, or download and print the outline of dove attachment.

On one side write a short prayer about something you would like God’s help with. Decorate the other side to make a beautiful dove.

Then see if you can find a stick and tie your dove to it with string or ribbon. Run with your dove prayer and use this running as a time to pray your prayer for the Holy Spirit to help you.

Older kids : Practise this simple breath prayer. Begin by breathing in and out, slowly and deeply. Read each line slowly and quietly. Repeat the prayer several times either using the same person’s or different people each time.

As you breathe in, say silently, “Peace be…
As you breathe out, say silently, “with (choose the name of someone you would like to share peace with).”

Then, as you breathe in, say silently, “Peace be…

As you breathe out, say silently, “with me.”
